This sculpture represents the reincarnation of Saint Christina the Astonishing, a woman who died of an epileptic seizure, but during the funeral service levitated up to the rafters. Using plaster, the sculpture explores gestures of jerks, jolts, starts, and stops, asking for both grace and tension, mourning and happiness, fluidity and brokenness, life and death. The sculpture moves with the artist’s own body, bringing it from Christina, who lived in 12th century Belgium, to Maria, who lives in 21st century New York City. Through their epileptic gestures, prayer, and the possibility of blank spaces, Maria, epileptic and unwell artist, and Christina, Saint of epilepsy and mental illness maybe come together, cripping time, space, worlds. Christina was shown as part of an Advanced Studio Works show in Macy Gallery at Teachers College, Columbia University in Spring of 2024.
